Here's an update that caught us by surprise: Wisconsin has quietly changed its IFTA small balance policy.
On quarterly IFTA filings, Wisconsin has historically treated small balances (roughly $1.00 or less) as zero. If your quarterly filing showed you owed Wisconsin $0.75, they'd waive it.
Not anymore.
We recently filed an IFTA return for a client and had Wisconsin require payment for exactly $0.33. Yes, thirty-three cents. Wisconsin now expects payment on every IFTA balance, no matter how small.
This change reinforces why accurate IFTA reporting matters, even down to the penny. Small rounding errors or estimated mileage can create these tiny balances, and Wisconsin will now expect them to be paid.
It's also a reminder that state policies evolve quietly. What worked last quarter might not work this one. Learning about these changes the hard way could mean costly fines for your business.
Whether it's $0.33 or $3,000, compliance is compliance. Wisconsin's new policy shows they're tightening enforcement on fuel tax collection, and other states may follow.
At Consultran, we stay on top of these policy shifts so you don't have to. We handle the details, track the changes, and make sure your IFTA filings are accurate and compliant with no surprises.
